While they are often cruel and evil, they can also make people empathize and feel sorry for them. The power of the evil in Japanese movies hints at the darkness in people's hearts. So even though they aren't so gory that you want to puke, the movies can make people feel fear and unease in their spirit. It's unadulterated psychological torture. We should say that it is terror in the truest sense of the word.
