If in the process of meditation, your mind gets overwhelmed with a range of emotions, how do you deal with it?

Try and remove yourself from things, and try to look at these complex emotions from the perspective of an observer, watch them as they form and extinguish, but don't make any judgements, just let them come and go, and don't follow them as they go, set your focus gently on one spot.

The first part does indeed have a lot of the sorrowful sentiment of parting, however you can't lump it all in together.
