May 6, 2007 at 6:03 PMHi Amber I am still wondering about why (qing1) "light" vs (an1jin4) "quiet" when the context is having to do with sound and not wright. I thought qing1 was a measure word of sorts having to do with weight or mass.

I have never used nor heard san1ba1 used in such a strong negative manner. It may be different on Mainland China vs. Taiwan. I believe, Anne, it is used in reference to the female gender mostly, now that you've brought that up.

April 23, 2007 at 9:28 PMTracy From my experience, San1Ba1 (three-eight) is a more gentle term to connote silly idiocy, usually in a child. My mom used that on me often as a child when I'd say or do silly things. I grew up in Taiwan. For instance, if you got up in front of the class and acted silly, made a silly face, san1ba1 would be appropriate. Also, for the newbies, small yet important point. Ken said "xia4 shi3" (scared to death) when he really should have said "sa1 shi3" (kill to death) when he and Jenny were explaining.

Wish I'd gotten to my email sooner than Rich...IF you are really going to reward the winner : ) Tracy, I agree with Jacob, ask a Chinese friend, an adult Chinese friend. My parents gave my Arizona-born chldren beautiful and meaningful Chinese names. I asked them to give the Chinese names as my Mandarin is merely elementary. Another suggestion is to look into "Tracy's" meaning, or the meaning of your last name and use it's equivalent in Mandarin. AZERDocMom Yih Shing
