June 30, 2007 at 2:06 AMI love this lesson! The story is so profound. Jenny, In terms of teaching newbies and elles, I think you effective took advantage of a "micro-teaching" moment when you said, "mao2" vs. "mao1, a cat." You could have gone through all 4 tones without expending more than a few seconds extra, but it would reiterate the different tones, which is what newbies and elles really need to hear over and over again. IMO, you ought to do that regularly during the Newbie and Elementary lessons. It really reinforces "in the moment" the proper tones while the word is fresh on the students minds. I often look out for these "teaching moments" with my nurses, patients and even my kids. It really facilitates learning when the setting is right to engage the nurse/tech/colleague and really make a patient care issue (or new vocab word) stick. Thanks for another great lesson : )

June 29, 2007 at 4:17 AMLaodai I just want to tell you that I appreciate that you post in hanzi, pinyin and english. I can't read hanzi worth beans, but can understand the pinyin due to my lower intermediate (verbal) mandarin comprehension. So, thanks. And, oh, Macs are great! And, what students did you show that movie to?

June 29, 2007 at 4:11 AM"I want to learn chinese but you just dont help me". 我想学中文, 但是你都不帮助我。 Wǒ xiǎng xué Zhōngwén, dànshì nǐ dōu bù bāngzhù wǒ. To be more polite and perhaps more effective at eliciting the helpfulness you want, I suggest that instead of saying "you just don't help me," say: "I want to learn Chinese, could you please help me practice? Wǒ xiǎng xué Zhōngwén, quin2 ni3 bang1 wo3 lien4 xi2, hao3bu4hao3?"

June 28, 2007 at 4:20 AMThis lesson reminded me of a movie I've seen with my kids, "Yi2 ge dou1 bu4 neng2 shao3" (Not one less) by one of the most successful director from China, Zhang Yi Mou. It was a very, very good film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209189/trailers-screenplay-E23013-10-2

June 30, 2007 at 2:31 AMOh, I forgot to mention how nice it is to hear ZiHeng again. He's been in 2 lessons in a row now. ZiHeng, You are terrific in the Zhang Liang/LiLi soap opera. And, you have let us get to know you a little bit more in the interview on Agricultural experience. You sure seem "huo2puo1" like my little son (who is 10 now) and you made me laugh when you said, "peng2you3men2, zai4jieng4!"
