June 20, 2007 at 1:30 AMTaipan, " Ken's tone mistakes are planned and deliberate. " LOL ! I will not call in any prescriptions...yet. Auntie, you're a bit of a firecracker, huh? (insert warm smile here)

June 19, 2007 at 7:43 PMHehe, how ironic that this lesson on global warming has stirred just that, increased emotional heat globally ; ) We must be careful not to overread the poddies' meaning and level of emotion in this mode of communication i.e. words on a computer screen. Man2Toe, I was not offended by your posts. My comment of Ken's imprecise tones does not at all negate my great respect for him. Leadership takes true humility the meaning of which, unlike what most people think, is a clear-eyed view of one's strengths and weaknesses without feigned self-deprecation. (Whew! that's a mouthful!)

June 19, 2007 at 3:34 PMYup, Auntie. It is difficult for most people, including myself, to take criticisms, but when given in a respectful manner, it will (or should be) received in the spirit it is given. I believe Ken takes our observations that way.

June 19, 2007 at 1:25 PMAuntie I agree with you. Pointing out/correcting someone's incorrect tones ought to be viewed as i.e. received as constructive criticism. I think it can be a disservice to newbies/elles to let wrong tones slide by simply out of politeness in the setting of a language course/podcast. In everyday conversation, there isn't a need for that kind of fastidiousness because in everyday interactions, meaning is conveyed with not just words but facial expression, hand motions, tone of voice, etc. In a language podcast, we only have voice and tone and pronounciation. I feel the personnel at CPod are of the highest calibre. But that doesn't mean they cannot improve. We all can. That's why we are here, isn't it?

June 19, 2007 at 2:33 AMJenny You cannot possibly put on 2kg or 4.4 pounds after eating watermelon! You don't look like you weigh more than 45kgs soaking wet. Or, do you mean 2 jing1 which is about 1.1 pounds or 1/2 kg? John I also love dong1gua1 soup: ) Yummy!

June 18, 2007 at 3:35 AMThanks so much, Amber! I figured there has to be the verb "addicted" since addiction medicine is a subspecialty, and I presume it is practiced in China as well.

June 20, 2007 at 2:06 AMJenny, Hawkaye007 I think there are a few distinct differences noticeable to the "seasoned listener" between Taiwan vs. mainland Mandarin. First, the mainlanders speak with more of a rolled "sh" and "ch" vs. a simple "s" and "ca" e.g. she4 vs. si4 (the #4), cha4bu4duo1 vs ca4bu4duo1. Also, mainlanders tend to have more of a rolled "r" sound to the end of their sentences. Jenny, John, is this correct?
