November 13, 2014 at 6:21 PMHi, greysparrow: by now you may have had the answer re: Peking and Beijing. I confess I do not check ChinesePod regularly because I have a regular job which is not demanding but is my priority. Peking is an old term when the capital is in Peking (literally translate as northern capital, with Cantonese accent, Beijing is a modern term since China uses ping yin, phonetic sound to reinforce standard mandarin. Both written as 北京 vs 南京(Southern Capital; not as confusing as oral chinese.) Is it?

July 1, 2014 at 4:42 PMHi David,I just came home from a long journey: to Taiwan then 安徽⋯Not quite over the jet lag but 乾女兒caught my eyes in my otherwise not interesting big pile of mostly junk mail.
Unsure if the following may be helpful or anybody still currently interested in knowing...
乾女兒means dry daughter, because you love this girl like your own daughter, only difference: her and your own is that you did not nurse her, thus dry vs wet (milking, nursing her), it is a very spiritual term = god daughter, similar to soul sisters if in same generation. 髙宗玉

April 26, 2014 at 9:04 PMSpeaking of counting down, I'm doing that these days. 五,四,三,二,一 , this coming Thursday, I am flying to Taiwan visiting for 2 weeks then continue my journey to China. The most exciting part is to this 中醫學院 --a teaching medical school to see a famous MD and prof. I am so excited, trying to pack seriously. In 5 days, I will be standing on Chinese soil. If Taiwan is my mother, China ihas to be my father. They were divorced once, and are are now reconciled. What is America to me where I have spent most of my life? You may ask. She is my adopted mom. 天涯若比鄰。我喜歡雲游天下,四海為家. To live is to travel...

December 28, 2014 at 10:14 PMIndeed, there are many ways to say one meaning in Chinese, 呆/待 both mean pause or stop a moment. You may have seen 呆 describes somebody is not too sharp, 呆子,therefore when you say the kid is so cute 我看呆了,in this sense you are just so fascinated by the cute kid , you freeze, temporarily slow down all the other senses. 我在這呆一會兒,do nothing (like a dummy) for a while.待is simply wait. Stop and wait. Hope this does not confuse you more.
