According to rough statistics from the China Centre for Children's Welfare and Adoption, of the babies received in every single place where “abandoned baby safety islands” have been established, approximately 99% of them are disabled children. The biggest reason that babies are abandoned is that families have no way to cope with the high costs of medical treatment and no way to cope with the future costs of special education for their special child. Many families are afraid that they will be made poor because of the illness. This has definitely revealed the imperfect aspects of China's present children's welfare system.

Abandoning children is illegal behavior. We don't wish to have children abandoned by their parents, but this kind of behavior can't be completely stopped. We can't change the practice of abandonment, but we can change its results. Establishing “baby safety islands” is to take responsibility for the life of every child, and give respect to life.
