I have had no problems with tipping in China, at local level it is most welcome for GOOD service in restaurants bar's and clubs. It is expected in RKTV and KTV clubs. As it is their income, the workers work for tips and are not always on any retainer wage. As a westerner in China I do not expect to pay more than the locals, if local friends tip in a situation so will I. I also pay my few Kuai for hair cut, clean shoes, food and beer in the street as it is the market price. The image of the filthy rich westerners is not from the tipping but the way in which money is spent. China has become a very big consumer society, and how you spend your money displays your wealth more than ever.

Good show many memories there ! John was right plan you exit. When first in Shanghai I would always know how many stops before I got off. Then I knew the names and planned to exit one stop early, and held my ground at the doorway. As for the lines for tickets, bus etc a "gruff " word from a white man got results.,even to the flower seller (kids) late night outside the clubs etc. Yes China town is the best place to get best value travel from any country to China. My problem words ...ZHEN, REN, CHA, I have to take care with Z & C words always

A word of warning !! if you have a new bike in CHINA it will get stolen for sure !! and do not use a Chinese lock and chain on it as they can be removed in 10 seconds!! Get one from home? or pay more than you paid for the bike in China ....I have lost several bikes already ..

Good lesson ..handy when you have had one of those suspect street side meals and are in a hurry to get back to your room !! PS: could have show a country side toilet in the photo ..non western style !! this one is a bit too clean for a public WC. I have found WC is used in many parts of China, even in common speech.

Always cross on the RED light in China, that way you know where the cars are coming from, on green they come from all directions, and have the bikes sneak up on you!!! "BEST RULE" close your eyes and cross anyway, just do not make eye contact with any driver or they will take right of way !!

Bazza a video clip with subtitles? not if they are like some of the movies I have seen with subtitles! it is a comedy on it's own ... Chinglish at its best, quite often no relationship to what the movie is about ! ( Thats what you get for five Kuai?)

The standard serviette/napkin in the restaurants I visit in China is a roll of toilet paper being empited from the centre of the roll. If up market may even be in a plastic holder!! :) Go local I always say !!
