December 23, 2007 at 11:41 AMWell a lot to comment on this week, on shopping the rule is the same as at home ...you get what you pay for ..Know your prices when shopping around. the markets can be a rip off if you get JUNK, most things are fake and as with ALL Chinese products check the quality. Shanghai is NOT China so anybody can find a place to settle in! My advise is to make Chinese friends do Chinese things, and for time out meet up with westerners at a bar once a week to get some English conversation..Small cities are great you are forced to become Chinese to survive. It is hard but worth while. Christmas is not big in China most large cities with hotel chains will promote Christmas dinner and party, but in smaller towns forget it!! When working in a coastal city we had to arrange our own Christmas through local foreign contacts Chinese new year is celebrated in my family circle, even though we are not Chinese, it is a nice way to enjoy the traditions and a good reason to enjoy the food. Being with several youth groups in my home town it is also a way to promote understanding of other beliefs.

December 10, 2007 at 3:46 AMThese masks are used all over Japan, they appeared in China after SARS. I have many memories of them during the SARS outbreak, and how we were confined to our home town during the period NO travel allowed. USA and Japan would not let you in for months afterwards!!! SARS did stop the Chinese "HACK" not so mutch spitting in public now !! There were some great health promotions during that period!! some great billboards ...many good photos!!

November 17, 2007 at 3:41 AMHenning you are correct ! "Isn't the question "Why do tje Chinese have no problem with nudity?" the wrong one? Shouldn't it be "Why do North Americans have a problem with nudity?" be more to the point?" Not only North Americans but all British countries. It is not a problem in Asian countries, Japan is realy into common bath houses. In China and Japan as stated it in the norm to walk around naked in the change room . (no strutting ) Mixed nudity is not a problem in China, once you become part of the community in areas away from the main cities. In the past with large family brothers and sisters mixed freely due to the limited rooms for privacy, communal bath houses and the like made it acceptable to be naked but always modest. "Unisex toilets" and showers are also very normal, and doors are left open, and yes all sort of discussions take place while on the toilet! The bodily functions are taken for granted. It is a part of life. The current generation of "single child" is changing the relaxed nature of this subject as they do not get the " exposure to others as much " and the community bath houses are becomming less common in new area's Regarding theft of Bikes I have lost 3 so far, even the big locks will not stop them.
