Local Chinese hospitals ! very interesting, I had a misfortune to have to go to one in the countryside. As possibly one of the only foreigners in the province I bypassed all those waiting in line( bonus points) but the hygiene was very primitive possibly by western standard maybe 1940’s, blood splattered clothing and medical waste on the floors dark cold building etc, a real comfort. Another experience was the dentist in the mid 1990’s. But I now go all the time to a dentist in a larger coastal city and get great service, as there is a lot of competition and the price is good compared to western price. And the eye test you need for your work permit in China, that was a challenge when neither of you speak the same language!! the eye chart! that is different ???

All good fun ... To avoid the food poisoning you must eat "dirt" and eat local, to condition your body to street food! in any country. As John said make sure food is very hot and just cooked, and there is no bad smell from the cooking oil! Drink the tap water in Shanghai it's ok Keep off the antibiotics the kill the good bugs !!! Beer and Bai jiu has done more harm to me than any food in China. Alcohol poisoning is as bad as food poisoning!!! Watch the toilet hygiene, even in the best of eating places. I get a little sick when I return back to western food at home from any Asian country, due to the change in food style!.

Great memories of China in this show! Street food is great just make sure it is HOT and well cooked. watch the ice in the beer ??? it will get you for sure !! Re Safety crossing the road. walk on the red light to cross the street as you know where the car that hits you is coming from!!! Ha Ha .... never make eye contact with the driver or he will not stop!! it works for the Chinese... take my word for it! ..and walking on footpath expect the un expected and you will be safe. as it is used for everything but walking!! As for Shanghai and most BIG cities in China as a westerner you are very safe walking at all times of the night ....

It is a part of life in China!!! great fun and a quick way to get drunk!! With some practice you can even win the game. But you can blow 200 RMB very quick, the bars love it!! You can always play scissors rock and paper if the dice get too fuzzy?
