August 10, 2008 at 1:10 AMThe sleeper BUS is a real experience in China, bunk beds on a bus. And in my case no seat belts, lying down for 8 to 12 hours with little head room not real fun!!
The old trains are also a real experience, the coal fired hot water boiler for noodles and tea, the squat toilets that drop onto the track.
The sharing of bed space with locals, the packed walkways, and the spitting "hacking" all night, yes great fun.

April 3, 2008 at 11:13 AMKen you are correct I started with the English version of Teach yourself Chinese book and got nowhere!! Then I later found the Children's books when in Shanghai. Chinese for Children they made much more sense and had a much slower approach to study. Then went to the foreigners learning books from the SH bookstore. And best of all I found CHINESEPOD learning method!!

August 31, 2008 at 12:27 AMYes Chinese hospitals!! (20 years ago)I had a mishap in a southern Chinese town and had to go to hospital to have a scalp wound, blood everywhere, running down my face, it caused quite an attraction.
The outside of building was very shabby inside the walls looked like the stairwell of a typical apartment block (Chinese) rubbish every where, in the hall were many Chinese waiting, but I got straight through; The surgery was very bare and not so hygienic, medical waist in plastic baskets, blood stained clothing . The the many packets of pill given for me to take!!!
And of coarse I was the entertainment for all the locals.
Now I will only use Chinese dentists, they are as good as the west and are soooooo much cheaper than at home! They are using the latest technology and components. even if it is in a shop front window.
