pretzellogic,

We're talkin' early 70's.  The length is about (guessing) 1.5 miles (correction..round trip so .75..so you are close).  There was nothing legal about it.

Regarding faces, one of the funniest comments I heard from a young child was:

爸爸,为什么欧洲人有大鼻子?

(Daddy why do Europeans have big noses?}

I was waiting for my ride in front of my hotel (so I was the freak show), but I laughed so the dad grabbed the child and yanked her.  I couldn't make out what he said.

Changye,

Speed Racer was very popular in the US with the anime dialog dubbed to English.  Early 70's.

Characters were:

Speed, Trixie, Sprittle, Chim Chim (monkey), Racer X (Speed's long lost brother), plus some others.

It was my favorite show.

Personally, I swore off all auto racing of any kind soon after a 185 mph trip down the strip between Nahant and Lynn Beaches near the Boston area (I wasn't driving...digging deep it was tricked out 68 Chevy (Impala?) vs a late model Dodge Duster with a nitros set-up...Duster won..I was in the Chevy).

Anyway, never understood the whole NASCAR and Richard Petty things (I'm sure I'll be crucified for this statement...but

Sorry none of the above has anything to do with the lesson or learning Chinese language.

mattwhyndam,

Don't know of any contemporary comics doing an English Speaking analogue of cross talk.

From the past I'd nominate (US comics):

Abbot and Costello....maybe Bob and Ray; Lewis and Martin (I think for sure).

I find the lesson very entertaining and useful.

How on earth did the new boss get "Bill" out of 周俊?

The L sound is a tough one in China.  In the lesson recording you can hear various pronunciations.

The name usually mutates to "biao" which can have some interesting and not always flattering meanings in combination with other hanzi.  My take is the Chinese are familar with the name from Bill Clinton days (and now Bill Gates).

I noticed the "dialogue" tab recording uses the standard 比尔 bi3 er3.

In short, I've been avoiding using the name Bill in my Chinese.  只叫我老马.

Maybe the writters of the series can have some fun with it.

国内机场。guo2nei4 ji1chang3 "domestic airport" is also a useful phrase.  Drivers usually assume foreigners are going to the international terminal or airport.

changye,

Got the point.  I'm a little bit above this lesson, so as soon as I've heard the dialog a few times (and check the vocab), I skip the lesson dialogue and move on to the Audio Review and Expansion.

Gotta say I like dipping into the Elle lessons to review.  I especially like this series.

coosecoose,

Not sure what the problem is from your description.  I  know on some of the older lessons the files save as HTML instead of MP3.

After select "Save As" make sure the file ending is ".mp3"..physically edit the file name to be saved.  Save the file type as "all files" or mp3 if that's available.

If that doesn't anser your question, your best bet is to contact CPOD by e-mail directly.

Some of this stuff was covered under a "frequently asked questions" section that went away with the upgrade of CPOD (I think it was last month).

I'm sure CPOD will reintroduce this section after they compile the new questions list.
