Lots of ways you can use ChinesePod. To get started, go to 'Lessons', then 'Channels', and choose your level. If you have never studied any Chinese before then go to 'Newbie'. Choose a lesson, listen to it, and work your way across the tabs "Dialogue", "Exercises" for each lesson, and so on.
After playing with the system for a while you'll see how it all works.
Have fun.

I actually felt the same way when I heard the dialog first, but it is the childbirth that is causing her pain - and emphatically not anything inflicted upon her. Nor does the humor (if it is humorous) lie in her pain, but in the fact that her husband completely misunderstood the situation. And, of course, it's fiction. I'd also note that there are women involved in the lesson production, and each of them can flag inappropriate content if they wish.
However, I guess in some ways it could still sound a bit cruel, though???

May 21, 2008 at 6:55 AMThere are a couple of things in this lesson that I would remark on. The first is having the dialog before the lesson proper. I think this can be a good way to start and I want to try it more often. Let me know what you guys think about that. The second point has to do with the xin jiang accent in the opening dialog. This is in fact a Uighur accent. From a learning perspective, I think it' s ok to get exposuere to some of the different ways that Mandarin is spoken and this is one way. However, we debated internally whether it was appropriate to do this. There are indeed people who speak with this accent, but by no means does everyone in xin jiang speaks do so. I think we need to make this clear.

May 2, 2008 at 1:11 PMRichard is really impressive. It must have taken many thousands of hours of practice to get where he is. I hope we cna get him back to do something in the future.
