February 25, 2008 at 2:40 AMJohn did a great job on this and I agree that it is a somehwat easy ele. As for me, I just couldn't make some of the recordings recently, so John kindly stepped in. There are no mysteries to report - I'm not leaving ChinesePod or anything like that, i can assure you. I really appreciate that people even ask.

February 21, 2008 at 3:15 PMHmmm. From soup rebellions to phallic symbols. I leave the classroom for 10 minutes and all hell breaks loose! I find zhiyuan's reference something of a stretch, as it were. There is no shortage of zany etymology for Chinese. If it helps remember, fine, but this one seems a little unconvincing to me. We generally try to offer explanations only after we've had someone do the research. I'm not sure I want to explain this one to Connie.

January 23, 2008 at 3:18 PMrusotexano, Each of the 4 tones will have its own lesson. Then we will even have a lesson on the neutral tone!

January 23, 2008 at 12:39 PMlichade, I can assure you that John's 'what?' is in the first tone. You'll hear exampels of the 2 nd tone soon.

January 15, 2008 at 8:08 AMWow. This is going back two years. The pace is much slower than in recent lessons. In fact, the whole thing was different. This is pre-John Pasden era. In fact this is pre-everything era. This is ancient! Ididn't even know they had computers in those days.

January 1, 2008 at 6:56 AMDid I really recommend taking out mosquitoes with a shoulder-launched missile in this lesson? Eek!

November 22, 2007 at 2:05 AMmarcio, I'm still not surte about the actual etymology of the term 生意, but you have made a greast observation. It's also a good mnemonic (I can never rememeber how to spell that word!)
