I am planning to go to HK in September and I really loved that restaurant... I am sure I will be back there :-)
It is so hard to translate some food names...if they are not very common (not in MBDG for example) it is impossible to guess what it is without a native Chinese I think!

February 19, 2010 at 12:58 PMI am a menu stealer... my chinese study for today is a menu I took in a Hong Kong dimsum place...(it was o.k. ...there was a pile of copies for everybody to tick the food and give it to the staff...)
I try to translate the dishes now (that time my Hong Kong friend ordered). I came until 鱼翅海皇灌湯餃. What is this? Dumplings in soup with shark fin stuffing? What does the 海皇灌 part mean here? sea/emperor/to pour... Is it a set phrase for a special cooking method? Or just a name for this dish?

Reminds me of the girl from my guesthouse in Zhada 札达阿里地区 telling me: "Oh, again, right, no problem, this is happening sometimes, does it bother you?" smiling friendly and walking away leaving me with water running down my bathroom wall in streams and dripping from the ceiling.
She was right. It happened sometimes. Sometimes when she forgot to turn off the pump for the reservoir on the roof which had no float assembly. The water came down from the roof to the bathroom 2nd floor, disappeared in the floor, gathered above my ceiling sheathing, ran down my bathroom wall and disappeared in the floor...so why should it bother me? ;-)... but I suppose one day the guesthouse will break down to a pile of wet render, rusty reinforcement and cheap thin pipelines...

February 6, 2010 at 1:35 PMhehe, you are the native english...I took the translation from mdbg...I also use "be cheated on by" but I thought the dictionary is maybe more accurate :-)...
I heard this saying was the reason an architecture firm was dropped out of the competition to build the Beijing Olympia stadium ...because in their design there was a green roof/canopy covering the stadium :-)!

February 19, 2010 at 2:54 PMMaybe I will try every seafood and vegetable dish in this restaurant :-) (I don't like meat)... But it is really fun to study this menu...I have to laugh so much about what I get after translating the dishes character by character :-) Like: uncooked boiled (!) abalone slice smooth chicken gruel... he he ... at least I learn some new words/characters!
