June 12, 2007 at 5:35 AMI'm almost convinced that Jenny took on the task, thus making it daunting for anyone else to challenge... what a style, what a wit, what a 拍马屁... If I'm wrong please don't correct me ;)

June 11, 2007 at 3:11 PMHum - sorry to ask such a thing here... maybe it has been told at one point in the Newbie lessons... I've not been over most of them... and the question has haunted me for a while... just wanted to know, why "newbie" is given as 菜鸟?? PS - "suppressing" laughter would be better, I guess. *yawn*

June 11, 2007 at 10:46 AMItaliana, hi! Fine 生词 shēng cí, new vocab. Just a couple of mistakes, illustrated in this sentence: 猪肉一定不如鱼肉 zhūròu yídìng bùrú yúròu (pork - certainly - not like - fish (meat)) : Pork is definitely not like fish, pork is nothing compared to fish... "rú" only means "like", as when you compare things - 小心! You can't use it by itself... For example, it combines in those conjunctions: rúguǒ 如果 / jiǎrú 假如, meaning both "if..." And Chinese people also consider fish as meat :) so you must say 鱼肉 yúròu (我不吃鱼肉) That's all.

June 10, 2007 at 4:59 PMHyunwoo, Losing and gaining weight constantly is referred to by a transliteration of the English "yo-yo effect", i.e. 溜溜球效应 liūliū qiú xiàoyìng. There has to be a better way though... LostInAsia, compliments :) 你摸底了困难摸得真知灼见! I didn't know 逛街 guàng jiē also meant shopping, though it's almost implicit... Is that usual? Thanks everyone 多谢大家!!

June 12, 2007 at 6:10 PMExcuter, I believe this is the right stance. 对不起 would sound obsequious AND hypocritical, sort of like "I humbly beg you to let me go at last" 好意思 means "being cheeky", so I think it could even fit in such a declaration (definitely my favourite phrase :)
