December 29, 2013 at 2:01 PMArgh... that attempt at an explanation didn't help, did it?
If a woman gives birth, in times of difficulty the man in the relationship needs to make a living, right?
I dunno... I'm starting to feel like I sound like an idiot. 0_0 Things are so different when people have money, right?

December 28, 2013 at 2:47 PMOh yeah, and if you're going out to work, you should have money, and if you have money, you should be able to prove it... right?
Anyways, that's how I work that stuff out in my... brain...

December 28, 2013 at 2:45 PMYou'll often find that there are roles to play for different genders in China.
You may find it sexist, but you also have to think about how, just a generation ago, the vast majority of China was severely impoverished. In a situation like that, it can make things a lot easier if one person is designated the role of going out to work, and one person stays home, and does chores.
Things are changing quickly, though. Who knows what'll happen in ten years!
Hope this doesn't rub you the wrong way...

December 28, 2013 at 2:41 PMIt sounds like your friend is worried you're going to start a fight by misusing Chinese. She's just putting some fear into you to be more polite. In reality, China is huge, and there are different social standards in different areas.
One time in Guangzhou, I asked how much it was for a bottle of water and how much for a bottle of coke. The coke was maybe two 毛s more expensive, and when I decided on the water, the lady said 真小气! and we all laughed. :)

January 5, 2014 at 3:27 PMAkifalcon - I love this explanation!
Even though I think I have a good enough handle on the simple use of 了 as an indicator of change of state, your weather example was so succinct!
I'll use this if I ever end up being a Mandarin teacher.
