and yeah, in the same vein trillion [tri 3] = million x million x million (10 to the power of 18), and so on....
so as you point out, the long system seems more correct...at least sticking to the etymology of the word

December 2, 2011 at 9:28 PMfunny thing is, while I was taught both as a kid and was very much aware of the two definitions, I've tended to be on the other side of the fence to you...I've tended to always think of it as 10 to the 9th myself.

December 2, 2011 at 10:05 AMI think we Aussies were just hovering for a while [I was taught both as a kid...Brithish billion 10 to the 12th, American 10 to the 9th]. 10 to the 9th only became standard usage in 1998:
Australian and international standards (AS ISO 1000:1998) now acknowledge this as standard usage
