Hello ChinesePodders!

July 02, 2007 at 09:50 AM posted in General DiscussionHello all,
My name's John Biesnecker, and I've just started working at the ChinesePod offices. I'm handling customer service (if you have problems and e-mail us, you'll probably get a response from me) and whatever else they think up for me to do (they're slave drivers, I tell you!).
I'll also be active in the Conversations section and the forum, and hopefully I'll get to know the members of this awesome community over the coming days and weeks.
I'm originally from Orlando, Florida, and I've been in China since 2003. For about 15 months prior to this I worked as a full-time Chinese-English translator. I enjoy languages, and am studying Japanese as well. I tinker around on the web, too.
大家加油!!

Hey johnb,
Another Floridian on the CP Team is great! I noticed you chose orange and blue over gold and black. Does that make you a gator like "Tex" and I?
I'm also from Orlando. Went to DP and UF.

Bazza is absolutely right. We American's are not the originators of English, just the originators of substandard, slang ridden, badly grammered English.
After all, we don't say I'm speaking AMERICAN do we?

England English is the real English, that's why it's called English. :P

Well, John kinda looks like Elvis Costello (if that's his pic),
We could give him "Elvis" as a nickname.

American English is "Real" English, all the others are imitations :-)

Oi, are you blokes speaking American or something? I can't understand half of this thread! :-)
Stick with your own name, JohnBJohn. You alone have the right to name yourself as you wish.

since he´s John Biesnecker why don´t we call him colt (since one colt´s name rhymes that fine on this name)?
that would be clearly a recogniseable name ( please don´t shoot me for this suggestion, I realy like the idea) ;-)

I wonder if John B can force through an Intermediate lesson that teaches me how to say "if it wasn't for our pitchers' habit of wildly tossing balls nearly into the Mississippi last October, my Detroit Tigers would have prevailed over the Cards in the Series just like in '68" in Chinese. It will be OK if that is only an Expansion exercise, as long as the main Dialogue consists of two people discussing the fact that this year's Tigers lead the league in runs scored and will have 6 reps at next week's All-Star Game.

Deshalb hier noch mal in English:
"Welcome! The world is small, but bigger then the United States of America and China" (translation is so much fun :-) )

oh no, another Wah Lummer.. Small world indeed. Yep, that was before the defect.. ha ha.. I started in Wah Lum in 84, went to China with M.Chan, Suzy, and some others in 85 for a "kung fu" tour.
See the following pic:

This was on TaiShan
BTW, I also spent about 6 years in Orange County, Ca before coming to Shanghai.

Amber
I just have to tell you that the Canadian "snowbirds" I treat every winter here in sunny AZ have without exception been the nicest, most polite patients of any of them. I always was amazed by that. So patiently waiting for their turn in the overcrowded, crushingly busy ER. I always wondered if living in the cold weather there had anything to do with it ; )

Yes, indeed. As Americans migrate up the west coast get away from pollution, high housing costs, and traffic jams, someday they'll end up at the border and Canadians will remember everything they've said. hehe ;-)

TaiPan,
Still, the chipmunk has got to go... ;) It's scaring the children hehe.
ps- have you been to Canada!? be careful what you say, you're outnumbered, hehe.

Ahhhh Billybillybilly hard...,
The Master Chan connection... it's all becoming clearer now. Was that before the monks defected or after? Chan Pui was an influential part of my childhood.
Amber,
What you don't understand is that "It's great to be a Florida Gator" and this chipmunk bleeds Orange & Blue! Always remember God is a Gator too, as the sun is orange and the sky is blue! Except in Canada where it's overcast and depressing.

I worked for the 'rat' for about 13 years and often went to Epcot to the China Exhibit there. In fact, because I was also studying at the Wah Lum Kung Fu temple at the time, I helped to bring many of the Shaolin Monks into the park for free (we received free tickets and passes at the time) when they were on tour of the US. I like the performances of the Acrobatic troop when they were there at Epcot.
Those female contortionists were amazing.

TaiPan,
You had better watch out. John B, BJ, John liang and/or John the Baptist has been appointed the killer of the chipmunks on Cpod... your little squirrel can run, but he can't hide ;)

How about JP and JB...?
Except with the way Chinese use the surnames first, I don't think either one will be happy with:
PJ
and
BJ
And since we've got 2 Gators from Championship U., they deserve to be exalted. How about...
King John
and
John The Baptist?
BBJBW, John2,
What IS it with all the Florida boys studying the putonghua? I'm in LA, but originally from Orlando, West Orange HS, and spent a year at UF...
Were all of us that impressed with the 360 movie at the China exhibit in Epcot? I don't remember anything else cultural in Central Florida.

Wow, another Floridian.. I am also a Florida Cracker and lived in Orlando for somewhere around 15 years.
So John, did you gain all your Chinese Language skills here in China? Can you tell us more about how you got to the level of translating materials? Did you start your Chinese studies in Orlando? I still have some friends there who would love a good place to learn (already told them about Chinese Pod of course). Do you have any Orlando resources for learning Chinese?
Thanks, bb

Hi Fu Da Wei,
You're right! That sounds more appropriate! In any case, John Pasden wasn't all too happy about the "Lanky" nickname so we better come up with another one!

July 03, 2007 at 05:41 AM
TaiPan,
blue&orange or garnet&gold? Blue & Orange
waffle house or skeeters? Waffle House
duibuqi or buhao yisi? Buhao Yisi
Amber or Jenny Zhu? I plead the fifth! :P

?Tex?
But, you're not from Texas, John, as evidenced from your
Sinosplice bio:
"I am originally from Brandon, Florida (a suburb of Tampa), and am a graduate of the University of Florida (Gainesville), where I majored in Japanese Language and Literature."

Very amusing thread here.
I'm going to have to think up a bizarre nickname for each and every person that calls me "Tex." :)

John B totally rocks! I agree though that we should give you a nickname or change John Pasden's name to "Tex". I'm gonna suggest that change once "Lanky J" comes into the office!
haha... excuter, John B's out to get my job!
aeflow, yup, you can leave a message for both of us about the typos, etc. and we will reply to you asap!

RonInDC, I actually have a lot of love for the Cubbies. Respectful and dedicated fans, no designated hitter, and no George Steinbrenner -- what's not to love?
FuDaWei, I thought JohnB would work. :) My in-laws call me Yuehan, so I guess that would be OK, too. I totally support calling Pasden "Tex," however, or as we did back in the day: "Lanky J."
AZERDocMom, thanks! I hope I'll be able to deliver the sort of customer service that the community expects and deserves. :) JohnnyB works, too.
kmkfr, Poddies, got it! As you can see, I've only just begun the rigorous 19-step indoctrination process. ;-P
xiaohu, 我也非常高兴认识你!Unfortunately, I wasn't an interpreter, just a translator, which I'm pretty sure is about a million times easier.

Hi John,
Glad to have you moderating out posts, look forward to seeing you online! By the way seeing that you've worked as an interpreter in the past, if you have any advice on how to break into the field I'm definately all ears!

Hi John!! Thanks for taking on such a monumental task as customer service! We, the community, look forward to getting to know you better!
And, may I suggest "JohnnyB"...it just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? Unless you think it sounds to boyish for you...?
