Initially, the I Ching had the 8 trigrams. The meaning of this 'trigram' comes from the word, 'gua', or to hang up; meaning that you should first hang it up, examine it often, and then you will be able to fully understand the rationality within it. This is different than the practice of divination. The practice of divination and fortune telling that you know, are actually the products of later generations expanding on the theories of the I Ching.
