Went to Expo last week for one evening and one full day. The evenings are the best deal - buy a post 5 pm ticket for 90 rmb and the crowds are by then all disappearing. In contrast, mid morning queues around the popular Japan, Saudi, Korea etc pavilions can take up to two/three hours. UK pavilion extremely interesting as too the Russian one.

A very polite youngish local Beijinger insisted on giving up his seat for me yesterday in the bus, even though I tried to repeatedly refuse it !

It has happened just once before on the bus in my four year stay in Beijing - but never on the ditie. That is more of a savage 'first come, first served' environment for seating in my experience.

In Beijing, I tend to navigate around by telling the driver the street name and the office tower (da4sha4 大厦) assuming of course you know it.  This is good for business meetings when one generally does know the name of the tower.

Giving the driver the number of the building on the street would be of no use whatsoever, and one would at best get a bemused look or total silence !!

I happily stood on the balcony of my high rise apartment block with many other celebrating and photographing Chinese tongzhimen, and watched the aeroplanes fly directly over us and down Chang An jie. Very impressive.

The rest of the show was anyway far better seen on television. Better close-ups and action shots. I was at Tiananmen one 'chun jie' morning and it was pretty frightening and claustrophobic being amongst the vast crowds there on that day. Much better and more comfortable being at home today.

Great show, Jenny, and a worthy successor to my former favourite 'Dear Amber'.

I once was in the Brunei jungle watching some locals hunting for birds' nests in a very large cave. The local guys swarmed up ropes and used long poles to bash down the nests from the roof of the cave. The smell was pretty strong - not sure if there was that much saliva in the nests !!

The nests were then exported  - perhaps to China to make soup, and to feed pregnant mothers !

I do not wish to be dogmatic here, but it is a little over the top.

Having said that, this is a practice that we all know goes on in China and other countries, and we perhaps should be better acquainted about it - in a more sensitive way though.

Amber - I know of a story about a person who loved Charles Dickens 'Pickwick Papers' so much and read it many times, but never ever could manage to bring himself about to read the last page so never actually found out the ending. I too cannot now listen to the last episode of Dear Amber - it has meant so much to me, really, over the months that I also can not bring myself to listen to it. I will keep it downloaded and locked up.

Goodbye.

Just got back from Europe to find the news.

Dearest Amber, how come it is only after people move on that we finally realise how much we loved them, and now miss them so much, and never properly thanked them for what they gave to us.

All the best, I will hunt you down one day in New York and thank you personally.
