Posted on: Buying a Newspaper
March 6, 2008 at 10:31 AMAlthough I now know a decentish number of characters, I really do find trying to read a newspaper somewhat daunting. Just too many characters on one page and somewhat offputting and very challenging. Like that comment in the film about Mozart on one of his composed works - just too many notes .

February 29, 2008 at 10:37 AMOn the food piece, I had exactly the same experience, Amber and Jenny. On top of that, my wife and I were the first ever waiguoren visitors to the yeye and the nainai (both aged about 80 yrs) , they and the other members of the family could not speak a word of English and my wife could not speak a word of Mandarin. Acting as translator and trying to be well mannered not knowing what to do proved an overwhelming task. I did though bring along a home madeup basket of fruit which went down well. We then had to make jiaozi with the yeye (hundreds of them for the deep freeze), and later had to eat similar quantities. Talk about being 'cheng si le' - neither of us recovered for about a week, despite all protests which just did not work at all. I was then invited back for this month's chunjie night to eat more jiaozi. I went with trepidation , but thankfully I was served a single shrimp - it looked more like a whale hanging over both edges of the plate - followed by sea cucumber. I really could not eat it and felt very embarrassed and did not know what to do. Loss of face indeed ! Just before midnight, out came the jiaozi - just when I thought I had escaped! I managed to make excuses to go and let off fireworks.

February 29, 2008 at 10:06 AMBerki - when I first visited Beijing back in 1988, I was literally followed around by policeman and soldiers. They tailed me everywhere - even caught the same bus to keep me in their sights ! Nowadays, as you say, no one even stares at you. It was more exciting in those days and just a little worrying.

February 29, 2008 at 10:02 AMAmber - bucked up the courage to listen. You did a good job there. Furthermore, you definitely are not wrinkled - the Shanghai air is obviously good for you. Meanwhile my lungs are full of dust.

February 29, 2008 at 9:45 AMI once had a dreadful experience with two Chinese girls meeting up and both feeling scorned simultaneously with me in the middle as the target. Unforgettable situation, and went really out of control. These girls can really fight to defend their turf.
