November 29, 2008 at 9:02 AMTheir deep throaty voices are the legacy of previous years' accumulation in the lungs and throats of coal dust and pollution. Now much better and very pleasant indeed to walk around and go sightseeing.
Went today to Jingshan gongyuan - if you climb up to the top you have a wonderful view looking south over the Gugong and can even see the new opera house (the so called Egg) looking very incongruous and in stark contrast to the ancient buildings.

November 26, 2008 at 6:55 AMJust been given a flu injection here at work - not sure if it will work with the Beijing sneezers and spitters all around me, but here is hoping .....

November 24, 2008 at 3:47 AMI find that there is a lot of amusing 'loss of face' when a waiguoren such as myself tells local people to 'pai dui' and not to 'cha dui' in front of their colleagues and friends. Good fun - especially at police stations when queuing up for the registration process in all the chaos - the police always take my side and treat the queue jumpers quite harshly, I find.
Also, just as good fun is to point out to people that they are smoking in a no smoking area, and await their reactions. Good for practicing your chinese and swear words and pretending to get a little angry depending on the reactions.

November 23, 2008 at 9:14 AMSuper stuff, Chinese pod. Whatever level we are, we can always get a lot out of these videos.
I have been visiting Pudong off and on for some twenty years now - not many empty fields left now !

November 23, 2008 at 8:51 AMThere was an interesting programme about the history of 'oracle bones' on the Chinese Culture show of CCTV9 ( the english language station) on friday last week. Perhaps any interested viewers may be able to get into the website and take a look.

Posted on: No Need to Take off Your Shoes
November 6, 2008 at 5:02 AMNormally repairmen ( and I seem to get a lot of those to my apartment) bring with them their own polythene type bags to put on over their shoes. I also now have a few spare ones just in case !

November 1, 2008 at 10:28 AMRe the copy DVDs, be a bit careful if anyone intends taking them back to their home country in their suitcases etc. One or two people I know have had very bad experiences with the customs immigration people on landing and have been searched coming off a plane from China and had to pay up excessive fines.

December 4, 2008 at 9:28 AMThe various references to lunch meat threw me. Then I realized they were refering to 'luncheon meat' as it is called / used to be called in England when I was a boy.
Either name, still does not taste that good. A bit bland to say the least.
