Does anybody know the derivation of the word 'scalper' - presumably an American term ? Not so commonly used in English - a ticket tout is more commonly used.

Also, why 'huangniu' in the putonghua ?

A few additional titbits from some of my local sources in big city Beijing:-

-apparently, lots of girls often also view porno movies / DVDs - in a group huddle together in their dorm at University. Some find them very amusing.

- as David said, once a relationship really starts and the girl trusts the boy and he has no other girl friend ( very important here indeed ) , then the girl will generally happily sleep with the boy, and even take the initiative.

- girls in relationships do stay overnight at their boy friend's place from time to time - especially on a friday or saturday night. They tend to tell their parents they are going to a late night party and will stay with a girl friend that night.

- I see a of young chinese girls going out with young western guys here in Beijing. It is pretty obvious from body language that they are having a close relationship. I used to sudy chinese with a bunch of young western students - the school even had the nickname ' the chicken school' because of the number of young local girls wanting to go out with the young foreign students and practice language skills etc etc.

- Some of the girls though seriously hope that they might find a marriage partner - invariably they are let down and the foreign boyfriend suddenly disappears back home. The expectations are rarely met.

We do not seem to get many mosquitos here in Beijing  - perhaps the drier climate deters them. The odd cockroach  - yes, lurking around in dark places.

I have recently started dancing here in Beijing -and it is the best fun I have ever had in my life. I do latino , and now salsa classes.

Plenty of partners to practice with, and it makes you feel so good -the music, the fitness, the movements, watching the girls dance - shenme de. I recommend it to anyone - even those with two left feet, like mine were when I started.

By the way, the picture looks more like a very sexy dance called bachacha , not salsa.

Never having been there yet, Chigao does conjure up for me a feeling of the old history and liquor prohibition, and underworld gangs, We used to have a great black and white TV series on English TV years ago called The Untouchables about it- starring Elliot Stack if my memory is correct. .

Strange - I was in Paris last week, and even went to visit a cemetary near Montmartre. i took a chinese friend with me to the cemetary who found the gravestones and 'little houses ' on top of the graves really fascinating.

When I was younger, I loved cats - always had one or two of them around the house . Did they all have personalities and they really liked disappearing into bags, hats, boxes, shenme de. ! Must have rubbed off on to me from myexcessively stroking them - later took on the part of The Disappearing Cat in one of the Alice in Wonderland plays at school.

Wonderful stuff again, Amber. I am so envious of Richard's speaking ability - I just seem stuck at my level nowadays and do not really improve. Must be what Ken says - I just have to put in thousands more hours of study time to get there. Is there no short cut , not even Chinese pod ?
