January 11, 2008 at 7:17 PMivy0, Changge above gave you an example of minus temperatures: You use the phrase (ling2 xia4) 零下 before the number to indicate minus temperatures. For example, in Montana where I grew up, it isn't winter until it is -40 below: 零下四十度 在蒙大拿州,这不是冬天直到零下40度是!

January 5, 2008 at 3:10 PMThis was a good lesson but a bit too much in the continous stream. This lesson could be toned down a bit and perhaps repeated at the Elementary level or Intermediate level with better effect. Still this is an important topic that one is certainly going to experience in a city in China. While I personally have not been involved in an accident in China, I have seen several. Thus this is needed language!

January 3, 2008 at 7:03 PMI don't know the origins of General Tso's Chicken but it certainly was not invented in 1974 as the article RJBerki cites states. I remember eating this dish long before that. Nice story but it does not hold up to the truth!

January 2, 2008 at 4:21 PMThis is probably one of the more valauable lessons for a Newbie to learn. You might add, expressions of time generally are placed before the verb phrase of a Chinese sentance. I think most often time is expressed first in a sentance. So it is important for someone learning Chinese to recognize this.

December 30, 2007 at 5:18 PMHollymorrow, I have downloaded almost al of the Newbie, Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced to my Ipod. ( I am probably an Intermediate learner although I still find things in the Newbie series that I did not know. Of course, who would know 放屁, fang4pi4, from classroom CHinese? I used the 1st method that RJBerki described. There are a couple of things that you may need to watch for: 1) The first half or so lessons in each catory came down as HTML files... I simply changed the file extension to .mp3 and everything worked fine. 2) a number of files came down without the header information that gives the lesson number, genre, etc. I had to enter this information manually in the Itunes software.
