所以读起来
基就是鸡吗。
在内地很多外语名词都是一半是译音 一半是译意思 例如：
Ice cream=
冰淇淋
ice=冰(译意) 淇淋=cream( 译音)

各位同学你们好！ 记得在 2005年我和家人到天津市旅游 我们发现有一些街道牌是用繁体字写着的。 觉得很奇怪 但当时没有向导游询问过。 如果学习中国书法 是否必定要用繁体字呢？ 陈博士

汉语通常是这样说的吗？ "instead of" 在这里用得着吗
是不是应该说： 因为下雨 我没去打网球 我去了酒吧！

In your last comment you were saying that "Chinaman."is a literal translation for the word 中国人， and is much like the still-acceptable terms "Frenchman, Englishman,etc."
Therefore, as we can understand,中国人should have been"Chineseman",just as you would say 法国人as Frenchman英国人as Englishman.However,if you look at the words carefully,it is not Franceman nor Englandman.No matter why "Chinaman" has no doubt become a "racist" or "degrading" term.
We are glad thatthis term is no longer allowed to be used in public under the US federal law.
One consolation for you,my old mate, perhaps one day those sensitive terms like Laowai, Yang Guizi,Guilao etc will be banned in China. It will be interesting to see.
