May 22, 2008 at 12:30 PMAlthough I don't think it is possible to add Enlgish to the Media lesson, I agree there should be English in the advanced lessons' PDF. Regardless of one's level or philosophy of studying a foreign language, chinesepod.com is a tool for those of us with out teachers to study Chinese (because there aren't any at the advanced/superior level courses here in Oklahoma). The English would allow us to check our guesses instantly. I do not believe this is spoon feeding. It allows us more tools with which to test ourselves. The learner could decide whether to consult the PDF with English. The desicion to spoon feed oneself or not would be in the hands of the learner. The translations in the PDF would also give tools to those that are trying to reach a higher level, but aren't quite there. I understand the Yi Zhong Tian and the commentary by our chinesepod teachers. Even so, sometimes there are expressions in the Advanced lessons that are not defined or discussed or the definition is not correct on the point and click in the dialogues. I know that I can ask on line questions and most of the time someone will answer them. However, sometimes I forget where I asked the question, and I can't find the answer after that, or it takes too long for the answer to appear. Chinesepod has been the best thing for my Chinese. Because of you, I went from wishing I could read novels in Chinese to actually doing it. In addition eventhough I can now read definitions of words in Chinese, sometimes I just want to know what the English equivalent is. I know there is a lot of debate at Chinesepod about this subject, so I just wanted to add my two cents. I listen to you guy all the time. Thank you for being.

She makes him sound like such a wuss. You can't download the broadcasts to your ipod, but can't have everything.

March 20, 2008 at 3:30 PMHow about an advanced Harry Potter lesson? I'm on my fourth HP book in Chinese. So many young Chinese have read HP that it is a great way to relate to the young whipper snappers when they host me. Just about every kid who has hosted me has been a huge Harry Potter fan. There are lots of Chinese chat rooms which my last girl (13 years old) often frequented. She apparently was a big fan of 马尔福。She also liked 罗恩。She felt that they did not give him a big enough part in the 5th movie which we watched together until her mom made her go study. It is interesting that the adults I meet in 广西，北海 can't understand the value of HP in expanding the imagination. After all, Steven Hawkings is a huge Star Trek fan. I wonder if this lack of imagination on the parents part is because they grew up during the Cultural Revolution. I have heard that because of the youth's access to so much more information than what their parents and teachers had growing up has caused a real problem with the students simply knowing more than their teachers. I can't imagine the generation gap that must exist. Regardless, Harry Potter is as big of a deal in China as it is in America and elsewhere. It would make a good advanced lesson. I'd give anything to have the whole series on books on tape in Chinese or some ipod downloadable format. Seriously-anything!

May 29, 2008 at 12:12 PMHas anyone ever noticed how many of the first consonants in Chinese correspond to the first consonant of its English equivalent? For example: fan4 gui1 and foul, shi3 and shit, fang4 pi4 and fart, piao4liang and pretty, e4lie4 and evil, ke4 and class, pi2jiu3 and pee (same color, and if you have ever seen Red Sorgum, you understand the reference), etc… Can anyone help add to the list? Fun vocabulary builder? oh well.
