May 2, 2009 at 2:17 PMThere are no useless lessons or words. I recently asked a woman who told me her name was Jiang, "is it 僵尸的僵？" She laughed and said no her name was 长江的江。
The fact that I knew the word for zombie in Chinese made me feel great, but her laughter made it even more worthwhile.

March 18, 2009 at 1:19 PMI recently had a Chinese person in my home who after seeing my pit bull, doberman, and lab wiggle, play and curl up in my lap (pit bull), said, "wow, they are just like children. I now understand why westerners don't like to eat dogs." Ironically, she likes the pit bull the best. Actually, you can see the pit bull sitting on top of the lab in my avatar. He is the cutest sweetest dog I have ever owned. I can't imagine my life without him.

March 15, 2009 at 4:31 PMNo offense to the Chinese, but when I try to teach the concept of face by using terms, such as giving face and receiving face, my students think I'm talking about something nasty. I often replace face with the word respect instead. Just an FYI to anyone dealing with young people, the whole face thing sounds very very bad to them. It takes 15 minutes to gain back control of the class. Same thing happens when I try to teach the word for mouth in Japanese-kuchi. After 20 minutes of laughter, I give up.

March 7, 2009 at 4:47 PMGreat lesson. However, I agree that the lesson doesn't need the inserted sentences that are already provided in the expansion section. What is even worse is that when the lesson came to the sentence part 衍生 it did not even play it. It stopped and eventually skipped it altogether. I tried to play it twice, and the same thing happened. Could be a fire fox problem.
Also, I was disappointed to see the English taken off the click-on transcript. I am a true advanced learner, but I live in Oklahoma where I don't have a teacher which is why I subscribe to Chinese pod in the first place (Cpod is the greatest thing to ever happen to my Chinese). I have read 10 full length novels in Chinese, so I am not one of those inbetweeners. Once in a while there is a phrase or sentence in the advance section I need to see translated. I also think it is instructive to those us who may want to learn how to translate like the great translater of our time, Howard Goldblatt (Mo Yan's translater). I just met both of them here in Oklahoma-it was so cool. I know I will never be a Howard Goldblatt, but I can dream, can't I?
Speaking of Mo Yan, I am still looking for a way to buy Chinese books on line. As you can imagine, the Chinese version of "Life and Death are Wearing Me Out" is not available in Oklahoma. Someone suggested amazon.com.cn, but they don't accept master card. I don't think they ship internationally. Is there any other options out there? I'm running out of books to read in Chinese. Please help.
I second the Battlestar Galactica episode idea. That is is the best show on TV.

Does anyone know of an online bookstore that sells nonChinese novels like Asimov, Harry Potter, the Golden Compus etc... that have been translated into Chinese?
