I think the 的 should be a 地 and the English translation should be something more like: "He operated the machine with great skill".

You're right! This 不过 doesn't mean 'but'. It's a verb complement. You can say...

verb + 得过 = be able to 'surpass'

verb + 不过 = unable to 'surpass'

Some common examples are:

打不过 dǎbuguò (unable to defeat/beat)

比不过 bǐbuguò (be unable to compete with / be no match for)

说不过 shuōbubuò (be unable to 'outspeak' someone / win an argument)

Hi bonscott,

The Chinese cricketing lexicon, like the game itself in China. is still somewhat in its infancy, so there are lots of terms that have no direct translation.

"to bowl" is 投球 (tóuqiú) - the same as pitch in baseball

for "scoreless" you could say 未得分的 (wèidéfēnde)

"over" is 回合 (huíhé) - also used in many other sports as 'round', or 'rally' in tennis and badminton. (I've also seen 'over' translated as 轮 (lún), but I don‘t think that's as 'official'.

So a literal translation might be something like:

他投了一个未得分的回合
