If it's a well known (in China) book, you can usually just go to www.baidu.com and search the English title of the book and one of the first few results should contain the Chinese name.
Another option is to go to www.amazon.cn and search the title (again in English). If the book has been translated into Chinese (and there's a market for it) you should get results for both the English language version and the Chinese language version (which will give you the Chinese title).
Another option is to search using Wikipedia and then see if there's a Chinese entry for that title (you can look for other language options in the column on the left side of the page)

I just looked up 搭 in a Cantonese dictionary, and it's pronunciation is daap3 (with a third tone, which seems to be a 'low-level' tone - though I don't know much about tones in Cantonese) so that MIGHT be a factor. Maybe also to do with the method of taking a taxi (using the hand to get one to stop). 打 does also carry the dictionary definition of to 'buy' or to 'rent' something, though I guess that may be a meaning that was added in retrospect to account for this use of 打的/打车。
To be honest, I suspect the origins of a lot of words and phrases (even relatively recent ones) in any language is often not much more than 'speculation'. Your question seems to imply that you believe someone made a conscious decision to replace 搭 with 打. I'm not sure language evolution (especiallly for this kind of colloquial saying) is so clear-cut, though I look forward to some input from anyone who can give you a better answer.
It's an interesting question. Sorry I can't give you a more definitve answer.

April 23, 2013 at 4:42 PMAccording to 百度百科 bǎidúbǎikè (Baidu's encylocopedia - so may very well just be someone else's speculation), the original verb that collocated withg 的士 díshì (taxi) was 搭 (dā). Here 搭 means 搭乘 (dāchéng) - to take (a form of transport). Sometime during the process of becoming adopted into Mandarin (from Hong Kong usage), the 搭 became 打。
