Hopefully you'll hear from the man himself, but in the meantime you can read up on John's excellent pronuciation guide from his blog (here and here ), which deals specifically with this question. You'll need to scroll down a bit for the 'r' part, though it's probably worth reading from the beginning as the tongue placement for 'r' is pretty much the same as for ch, zh, and sh.
