That was just tremendous. You did an incredible job, your level must be quite advanced - ready for proofreading the lesson transcript pdf's for CP! Thanks, I going to go over this tonight.

February 4, 2010 at 2:14 PMHi Bababardwan,
I think your interpretation is just great. I wasn't sure what was "Thunder monster" but realized that was the made-up name for the cross between a rhino and hammerhead shark. The "long neck horse" didn't seem an apt description to me either. Seems the increased number of legs impressed me, not a giraffe like neck. When you originally posted about the first 1.5 minutes, I thought you were talking about the banter. I'll try to take a look at the Googledoc next time. I have to go to work, but the 分化瓦解 has no English direct equivalent - maybe "divide and conquer" but demoralize too. (see Nciku.) We've got get together to divide and conquer next time!

February 4, 2010 at 5:10 AMI have no idea why I'm doing this, but here is the first part:
In the year 2154, a land development company called RD, came to a place called Pandora to start development, calling upon the populace - only if they moved on would they receive compensation. But the residents of the street were pretty much rooted, saying this has been their homeland for many generations, they didn't care how much money was offered, nor how better the new place, they would not go. The development company was vexed, this company was actually affiliated having the government, in their back pocket were a couple of violent by nature thugs, just like federal bureaucrats, started the fighting. But the residents possessed some exotic homegrown weaponry, bows and arrows, stones, not to mention so rather large pets, long-necked horses. Thunder beasts, men, women, old and young alike were difficult to budge, add to that the old roads, rugged and complex landscape. Cell phones all have dead zones so at the outset they couldn't gain the upper hand, many ended up casualties, at this time, the development company sent out Avatar as an undercover agent. The so-called Avatar plan is in fact a way to appear to be like a native, learn the ins and outs, understand the lay of the land, divide and demoralize as well as to supply the development company with an optimal relocation plan.

Are you able to read the US based WSJ online?

February 2, 2010 at 10:31 PMIt is not that at all. Do you remember a few lessons ago when one of the fictional characters said, "We see the same movies you do (outside of China)?" Well, that is not exactly true. China only allows 20 foreign made films to be shown every year, many severely edited. Avatar is being restricted to allow Chinese film makers to compete and because it has strong parallels with the displaced homeowners (as mentioned in the discussion and in an earlier lesson on this topic.) It is no accident at all, the termination of showings corresponded with the onset of a Chinese holiday. For those CP's outside of the country, enjoy the 3D like me, at a discounted near empty weekday matinee!

February 2, 2010 at 1:58 AMArdeshir, you are challenging yourself at this level!
得 is the operative word here. It is an example of a word which has different meanings and pronounciations in a variety of contexts. In this circumstance, it means "must". So if you put in front of a verb, it changes the meaning of the sentence to an imperative.
As an aside, I LOL when I read the translation - literally correct, but not anywhere near how a native English speaker would say it.

January 27, 2010 at 2:11 AMWishing to comment on the translation of 絕病, I double checked with a Chinese doctor. This means terminal illness which should be distinguished from incurable disease. While realizing the writers are not medical people, are there people on staff to make sure these outrageous mistranslations 活不下去? ;-)

December 7, 2009 at 1:43 AMSorry guys, I can't agree with the relevance of this lesson nor the Pirate lesson. These words just aren't nor will be part of my daily conversation. Although the sounds effects are entertaining, in general, they detract from hearing clear pronunciation.
A single page out of 万小刀 blog (media lesson) has more useful vocabulary when I speak with relatives, acquaintances or friends.

谢谢你的既快又仔细地回答。我太太老嘲笑我的缺陷观念,尤其“不重要的”细节。 。 。 。 。明白了!我自己分不清幻觉和现实。 哪,我很想了解,医院的病人总是带身份证明的手镯。为什么尸体”无法确认“?

February 7, 2010 at 4:31 AMThe bit about 3000 city managers . . . take Taiwan refers to a boast made in the past about 3000 soldiers. I think what had me a little confused is there is no equivalent for what has been translated as city managers by Cpod in the US. They appear to be quasi-enforcers, some part-time. Apparently some developers have employed thugs/govt enforcers to get their way.
