I reckon the gender imbalance can be mostly solved if the government changes the 1-child policy to a 1-son policy.

Brilliant!

The summation function f(x)=1/x and x starting as 2 to infinity = 1.

You should be on the Central Planning Committee.

Changye,

Have you ever heard the song, by J. Giles Band?

My blood runs cold
My memory has just been sold
(Angel is the centerfold)

Slipped me notes under the desk
While I was thinkin' about her dress
I was shy I turned away
Before she caught my eye

I was shakin' in my shoes
Whenever she flashed those baby-blues
Something had a hold on me
When angel passed close by

Those soft and fuzzy sweaters
Too magical to touch
To see her in that negligee
Is really just too much

My blood runs cold
My memory has just been sold

Here are some words from the banter surrounding "country bumpkin":

圆滑   [yuánhuá]

       adjective sly

精致   [jīngzhì]

       adjective delicate

世故   [shìgu]

       adjective [贬] worldly-wise

绅士   [shēnshì]

       noun gentleman

"what's the B in B超"  超 translates into "mode" as in B mode ultrasound.  As Changye noted, there are A-mode, B-mode, M-mode echo's.

Regarding "Hereditary" versus "genetic" . . . . not all genetic diseases are hereditary diseases - diseases with what we call acquired mutations, those taking place over the course of living such as viral induced cancers (cervical CA) or environmental induced (radiation induced thyroid cancer) are not hereditary.

I can't think of the converse except for "My son makes me crazy."

I just wanted to make a short note here, as a physician for anyone thinking they might learn something medical from this lesson.  There only a weak connection between diet and hyperuricemia.  And there is even a poorer connection between hyperuricemia and the occurence of gout.  The lesson's fictional doctor while giving generally good dietary advice probably failed pathophysiology class in medical school!  Of course we are here to learn Chinese - not medicine.

Reigau:"你看中国还是社会主义的国家吗?"

 (社会. . . . 共和国?) 哈哈把我牙都笑掉!翻天覆地变化,中国回到革命之前的样子。

Pete,

Thanks for your reply, it "Blows me away."  Sometimes brevity fails to capture nuances.  I think this is where yourself, as a native English speaker can surpass a computer, dictionary or native Chinese speaker.

"Beverly Hillbilly" isn't comprehensible to an entire international audience, but it captures the essence of 暴发户.  Would you please consider an expanded and where helpful, idiomatic equivalent in the future?

Tvan - I was merely quoting from the pdf.  Thanks for the link to nciku.com

Pete,

Could you please explain how

偏激 translates into "extreme"

and

雷人 translates into "terrifying"

Are these accurate and translated correctly?
Thanks . . . .

Miantiao and Reggau, reminds me once in Korea, I saw a big Kia truck cut off a small sedan.  Both drivers got out of their cars for a fist of cuffs.  The hulking driver of the compact beat the h*ll out of the diminutive truck driver.

Changye,

Chinese jingoism is not unique among the donwtrodden, IMHO.  Koreans and African-Americans are fiercely tribalistic.  I think historical inferiority complexes takes time to work its way out before people realize personal pride can only spring from oneself.

Maybe you can speak to this.  Japan's leaders correctly said Japan had not suffered a defeat for 2600 years at the outbreak of WWII.  It was a very humbling period, a transformative period for Japanese from 1945 onward.  Despite recent stirrings how did Japanese accept MacArthur's imposed pacificism?
