August 3, 2012 at 11:24 AMyikes! I just wasted a couple minutes of my life reading this thread. Can we talk about Chinese? I would love a lesson about where certain Chinese words fit on the continuum of slang / mildly crude / slightly offensive, before I make an ass of myself (again) trying to be flip in Chinese.

Not a new software concept, but very cutting edge lesson for CPod. Can't wait to listen . .

July 31, 2012 at 4:00 AMGreat lesson. Is it or isn't it? 是不是? A long time ago I was one of those foreign learners who thought that somehow Beijing should be the place where the "most correct" Chinese was spoken. John's comment that Mandarin (普通话) (pǔtōnghuà ) is just a "generalized" form of Northern dialect (to which Beijing's type of speaking belongs) is very interesting. I guess there is no "place" to go to immerse oneself in "proper" Chinese, other than CCTV television, as Di Lu suggests. Here in the US sometimes if I mention that I have studied Chinese people will ask "Oh, Cantonese or Mandarin?", not realizing that there are literally hundreds of languages grouped under the common name of "Chinese," as John points out

July 28, 2012 at 10:33 AMI see "jia li you shi" (我家里有点儿事) is translated as "having family issues" (so maybe someone is having personal problems, such as got sick and could not work.). I suppose "zai jia li you shi" might mean there is a problem in the house (for example the plumbing is not working.) Or does 在家里有事 just sound wrong no matter what the meaning?
