You're right. It seems that, in Putonghua, 生蕃 doesn't have the same "cannibal" meaning it has in Cantonese.
In the following example sentence 生蕃 only means "savage" :
嗜食人肉的生蕃对被俘掳的传教士说：“我们想设宴招待你（吃掉你）”。 ("We would like very much to have you for dinner," as the cannibal said to the captured missionary.)

September 29, 2009 at 5:53 PMTo be honest, I picked 生番 (savage, cannibal) from cantonese and it's now sticked in my memory. But, according to Cantodict, this word seems to be used in Putonghua as well: "This term is used in both Cantonese and Mandarin/Standard written Chinese."
