August 29, 2009 at 5:49 PMGreat lesson. That was very entertaining.
As Changye mentioned 太空穿梭机 (space shuttle) in the comments, I thought that a boomerang was another kind of 穿梭机. But, in fact, a boomerang is only 飞去来器 (not really a kind of complicated 机).
Also, a homing pigeon or carrier pigeon is not 飞去来鸽 or 飞穿梭鸽 but 信鸽 or 通信鸽 because it carries mail and a yo-yo is called 溜溜球 (liūliūqiú) or 悠悠球 (yōuyōuqiú).

August 28, 2009 at 7:46 AM缺心眼儿 sounds much stronger than just "naive" :
缺心眼儿 (quēxīnyǎnr)
1. simple-minded; scatterbrained
2. dull-witted; mentally deficient; retarded
For me, 做傻傻乎乎 (zuò shǎshǎhūhū) or 做傻乎乎 sounds more friendly and much easier to memorize and use (like 马马虎虎).

August 22, 2009 at 5:49 AMAbout the lesson introduction, it says "the Shanghai Trio are going to tackle everyone's favorite particle". I thought it was a typo as "is going to tackle" would come naturally but the english language is so divers and full of surprises.

August 21, 2009 at 1:36 PM六害 seems to be an old concept, 十害 would be more appropriate today :
害单位 (事业单位) be harmful to the "work unit"
害公司 be harmful to the company
害地球 be harmful to mother earth
害动物 be harmful to animal (不善待动物)

August 18, 2009 at 4:33 PMShenyajin and Changye, thank you for the explanations.
The english definition of 六害 seems quite different from the chinese definition.
In chinese : 害自己 (be harmful to oneself)、害家人 (be harmful to one's family)、害朋友 (be harmful to one's friends)、害人民 (be harmful to people)、害社会 (be harmful to society)、害国家 (be harmful to one's country).
In english : prostitution, pornography, abduction and sale of women and children, gambling, drugs, and fraud associated with feudal and superstitious practices.
Is 六功 the opposite of 六害 ?

August 17, 2009 at 2:17 PMI hope you can give me a better explanation than the one I just get : "the dice is called 色子 because it has some black spots on it".
Is the chinese dice "colored" because of the dark spots ? ;)

August 17, 2009 at 1:34 PMIn chinese, a dice is called 骰子 (shǎizi) or 色子 (shǎizi).
The word 色子 clearly shows that the old chinese dice had some color(s) on it.

September 3, 2009 at 2:06 PMI won't jump to conclusions but I wonder why the Google results are so different 2 weeks after I mention them on this page :
"the trio is" Google results : 1,280,000
"the trio are" Google results : 543,000
"the * trio is" Google results : 3,280,000
"the * trio are" Google results : 1,130,000
"the * trio is going" Google results : 203,000
"the * trio are going" Google results : 70,100
Btw, this Cpod page is now second on the Google result list when you look for "the * trio are going". ;o)
