Hi bababardwan, Hi All. I appologize for the confusion RE; 外科 and 内科 A nurse friend of mine confirmed that 外科医生 deals with surgery. So this doctor is a Surgeon. 内科医生 is a doctor that deals with methods of talking medicine (not surgery) to help or cure disease processes. So this Doctor is more like a Physician All the best with your studies

Hi bababardwan Because the Chinese Doctor would know about this ancient connection to the title of 大夫 then in saying this way at times would show to the Chinese Doctor that they efforts in study and medicine practice would put them up with the best of their medical role models from ancient times.

Being a doctor for the Imperial family was a title most respected for the doctor who treated the Imperial Family. Similar to the respect granted to doctors of other cilivilizations if they too did attend to the family in charge of the country. Be it the Queen, King or Prime Minister. So yes using the term 大夫 in front of the Chinese doctor at interpersonal occasions would lead to this ancient connection that you do respect their level of achievement.

bababardwan ,

furthermore a disinction is made between western medicine and chinese medicine at the hospitals I see in Beijing.  The Chinese Hospital would use the term 中医 as in the term 中国 to denote that that hospital devision uses Chinese Medicine to help treat the patients.

Other denotations are used in the area of study for the doctor. Eg 外科 (wai ke) 内科 (nei ke) 外科 is a doctor whom would be specialising in illness mostly on the outside of the body. eg Skin Disorders 内科would be a doctor dealing with internal body medicine. eg Heart Surgeon. The 内科医生 at most times is repected more amongst the Community of Chinese Doctors.

bababardwan ,

医生 is the official title of the doctor. Yes it is more commonly used. The invite in switch to use 大夫 is in showing the doctor that you respect them and after the doctor understands you wish to have a respectiveful relationship the doctor is then also happy that you may call them 大夫. at a more personal leveled relationship.  But introducing this doctor to other people or accepting the Doctor's business card the term 医生 would be used so as to understand this Doctor is a Doctor of Medicine. Especially when introducing the Doctor to allow people it is best to use the title 医生

All the best with your studies.

bababardwan at times I address Chinese doctor's here in Bejing China on the phone and face to face. The safest title I use for maintaining and expressing respect is to use 医生 after the Doctor's family name. Eg. 于医生 (yu yi sheng) After an established relationship I find it Ok to call the same doctor 于大夫 (yu dai fu)

At most times you may see 西医 and 东医 written in the Chinese version of the Doctor's CV explaining what they may have studied during their years of training.

The time leading up to the "Year of the Pig" there was much discussion regarding the increase in China's birthing rate during this year as by the Chinese Zodiac it is known that a baby born in the "year of the pig", that person is looked upon as having a good life.

At this time I reviewed my parents behaviour as me and my three brothers are born around October and November but there is seven years in total between the oldest and youngest son. By my calculations I thought of the reasons for my mother's impregnation. Reason 1) New Year's Resolution 2) January my father's Birthday....Go Dad!

In this dialogue, Yu Xiao Fen understands that her last menstrual period was November 7th. If this dialogue is current, certainly the expecting couple missed the "Year of The Pig". The James Bond movie was officially released in Chinese Cinemas by 5th November 2008. It may have been an inspirational movie for the expecting couple. 于小芬的老公。。。。加油!http://007.com/international/

Any other ideas for the inspiration for the timing of this "Chinesepod birth"? Maybe Chinesepod can explore this cultural decision process for this couple in future lessons?

Sir Elton John knows there is a "Porch Swing in Tupelo" I would think this "Porch Swing in Tupelo" would be a great place to kick back and listen to some Chinese Pod lessons.   有趣!

The Chinese Language at times is so succinct and at the same time rich in definition and meaning. Learning these short and rich sentences is such a treat of learning Chinese.

朋友们!我祝你们圣诞快乐!新年快乐!
