May 1, 2010 at 7:31 AMWe never do that.......The best way is to talk with a shanghainese
I am a Shanghainese and is looking for a language exchanger,my plan is simple and clear. The best way to acquire a foreign language is to speak it as much as possible, preferably with a native speaker. We will select one theme, for instance,Shanghai's famous pedestrian street, then you prepare as much Chinese information as you can,Of course I will do the English part.when we meet,we can talk like friends and I will try my very best in improving your intonation,pronunciation,sentence-making,etc...if you are interested in this, please contact me at jiangcheng1985112@hotmail.com

May 1, 2010 at 6:59 AMHi,go_manly...
If you have ever been to neighbouring cities or towns around Shanghai,I mean 绍兴 or 杭州or苏州.Their dialects are close to the Shanghainese, actually,Shanghai used to be a small village for almost 7 hundred years.Believed it or not, even in late Qing Dynasty(1644-1912),苏州 is much more developed than Shanghai. But after the second Opium War,China became a semi-colonial and semi-feudal country....The western invaders set up leasehold lands in Shanghai,,we call them "国中国",means a separate small region within a sovereign country,it's a crying shame! Then it's quite natural and reasonable to understand why there is an English word called "Shanghai" and why Shanghai dialect borrowed so many English word to itself.which is Pidgin English.

May 1, 2010 at 6:29 AMYour sense is correct.Shanghainese somewhat sounds like Japanese.Compared with Northern Chinese,Southern Chinese are more accustomed to Japanese.

May 1, 2010 at 5:46 AMHi,Mr.tal_....
I am a Shanghainese and I have witnessed the similar situations at least 50 times what you metioned.......Definitely,in western countries,an appropriate and effective way to refuse is a polite"No,thank you"with a smile. But here it often doesn't work. The reason is simple:they are trained to make money, and it's the top priority for them, therefore they won't easily give up.The big secret is what I am going to tell you:In Chinese culture, smile sometimes means acquiescence. For example,a Chinese boy asks a Chinese girl if she would like to be his girlfriend.Rather than say something directly, the girl prefer to smile and a pink flush spread over her cheeks...That's the Chinese way of saying "yes"!!!!!!!!
So,next time, just show your anger to them and they will be intimidated.

May 1, 2010 at 7:35 AMYour point is correct. We never write anything like 比尼 to say 便宜,we just write down 便宜,but pronounce it in Shanghainese....
