June 19, 2007 at 1:36 PMtonyc, 可以 and 能 both mean 'to be able to', 'can'. Yes, they are interchangeable. But 能 is more colloquail than 可以。

June 19, 2007 at 1:28 PM我一个抽烟的朋友去美国住了几个月，几乎戒烟了。他说抽烟的人好像特别被single out。室内都禁烟，而且他周围的人也不抽烟，还特别反对抽烟。他觉得这种环境给人的感觉是抽烟就像是犯罪。他后来自己都不好意思抽了,觉得guilty。自然就戒了。可是回到中国，环境比较smoker friendly, 很快又抽了。可见old habits die hard.
