September 12, 2007 at 2:21 AMTaiPan, although this is my 8th or 9th trip to China, I haven't been around much. I saw Beijing (well, every visit), QingDao, and LianYunGang. Almost every city can turn highly interesting if you meet local people there.

September 10, 2007 at 11:07 PMTaiPan, a real masseur. The kind that does massages. With a medical background (with a slight *Chinese medicine* touch to it). A strong, middle-aged man who's favourite move seems to be to almost rip the head from the body to loosen up the spine...

September 10, 2007 at 5:31 AMOne of the first dialogues I carried out in Chinese went like that: Me: 我吃饱了。 Mother-in-law: 不好吃吗? Me: 好吃! Father-in-law: 好吃,多吃!!!

September 8, 2007 at 7:56 AMThere seem to be 2 main types of chinese women: Those who act as desribed in the podcast. And those who drink baijiu like water. I even met a Chinese woman who has been trained by her parents to drink. As a child. To become a successful business professional once. Freightening. There are a few examples of a golden middle way, though.

September 8, 2007 at 7:41 AMgoulnik, exactly. That is the difference between well-intended layman teaching and professional one. Conversations where you are in interrupted every other sentence and digress into tone repetition exercises or even worse discussions and speculations of word usage, can b ecome frustrating to the point of being humilating. Subtle reprasing is the way to go.
