September 2, 2007 at 12:06 PMHi changye, actually orthography and grammar are defined by govermental regulations which need to pass both the votes of the federal (Bund) and the state (Bundesländer) governments. The respective regulations are prepared by a conference of the ministers of education. Until 1996 those regulations officially referred to the dictionary of the "Duden" publishing house, which is still highly influental regarding those questions. The usual way of the Duden is to follow a combination of rules and documenting actual usage.

September 2, 2007 at 11:16 AMHi changye, for newly imported nouns the rule is that you choose its grammatical gender according to a German equivalent, e.g. "die E-Mail" (fem.) because it stands for "die elekronische Post", "das Wiki" (neut.) because it is a short version of "WikiWikiWeb" and a "Web" is English for "das Gewebe" or "das Netz". It is more difficult with older imports. The German word "der Kotau" (m.) comes from the Chinese "磕头", but don't ask me how its Gender was determined...

September 5, 2007 at 5:35 AMI heard a couple times now that addressing a young lady with 小姐 should be avoided by all means because 小姐 has gained the implication of "prostitute" in recent years. It was explained to me that this was born from the need to distinguish between the 服务员 and other professionals in bars. Maybe this is a northern thing?
