I liked that couple of méi - 霉 yet another character not to be taken at face value - 字不副实, I daresay - it looks like a finer phenomenon than rot, more like 露 lù... - 媒体的媒也很有趣! I didn't know this was a (part) transliteration, and had assumed that it was a picturesque periphrase of the media as a go-between (which is more gentle than a shark for sure) You definitely have found THE rhythm, may your heyday know no mayday! hm-

May 25, 2007 at 1:49 PMAlexsetch, what do you mean exactly? Not that I question your clarity. All characters (except a few rebels like 山) have a fixed intangible millenia-old order of writing. It's quite important when you're taught by a deft finger how an uncanny sound becomes clear when traced in the palm of a hand. It rules the cursive form of characters of course. Well, just go to any website where the basic set of rules of 书法 (really not complicated) and stages for writing stroke by stroke any character are described (I have no suggestion because I used French ones, but the web is rife with them. PS I can't figure out just how one can learn the ole lore without paying attention to the written aspect, which attracts so much the other kind of customers. To all those who think pinyin could readily replace the ole glyphs, search Zhao Yuanren's tale: 赵元任 : 施氏食狮史 shī shì shí shī shǐ. :)

I was puzzled too with the issue of discrepancies between written and computer fonts (see e.g. 直) but your question made me realize that the truly disturbing differences were found within the computer-displayed system, Unicode. Most paper dictionnaries have it that the radical for 臭 is indeed犬, and the software I use displays a set of glyphs wherein chòu bears that point which indeed is an itchy one. May 24, 2007 at 2:23 PMThe complicated forms are found as well in PRC, on banknotes and cheques 0 零 líng 一 壹 yī 二 贰 èr 三 叁 sān 四 肆 sì 五 伍 wǔ 六 陆 liù 七 柒 qī 八 捌 bā 九 玖 jiǔ 十 拾 shí There are also those variants, that you may find in some newspapers, which begs the question of why the have any pronunciation at all... 二十: 廿 niàn 三十: 卅 sà 四十: 卌 xì And a lot more stuff I've no idea of :)
