Thanks for reminding me that La Fontaine, as well as Grimm or Walt Disney, have drawn from ancient folklore the fabric of their fame. Even Aesop and Hesiod did so. What I wanted was to know why (as much as I can hear) the measure word for fable should be 所 suǒ and not shǒu 首. I thought suǒ applied to public institutions, I must be wrong somehow, somewhere. 谢谢

May 31, 2007 at 11:24 AMActually, 比如 is used for more general illustrations than 例如, which refers only to concrete examples. Thus 比如 is used more frequently. You can say: 我喜欢去商店买东西， 比如服装，水果，等等 - wǒ xǐhuan qù shāngdiàn mǎi dōngxi, bǐrú fúzhuāng, shuǐguǒ, děngdeng 我昨天买了好多水果， 例如香蕉，橘子，等等 wǒ zuótiān mǎile hǎoduō shuǐguǒ, lírú xiāngjiāo, júzi, děngdeng The second example refers to an actual purchase. Well, I'm not sure that those examples illustrate the point, however, lírú is more restricted (譬如 pìrú is the same as 比如 but seems quite 书面语, literate) I need some support or correction :)

May 29, 2007 at 3:57 PMThanks a lot Jenny. So the official 健康检查表 jiàn kāng jiǎn chá biǎo has a double mistake in it: 辩色力 biàn sè lì = colour senes(sic)... How disconcerting. Maybe it's a test of my mental faculties.

May 31, 2007 at 3:54 PMActually 如 is used to express likeness (not like "I like that stuff") or similarity. E.g. 如此 rúcǐ means "thus", when you've just talked about "how" (此 is a demonstrative pronoun). You should only use it in set words and expressions, because it's a classical hànzì. So the name could be interpreted as what I've said (jocularly), it would have to be 如武泌 to make sense.
