But I reckon if you bask in speech long enough you'll get the feeling to build sentences according to patterns that even John couldn't either explain or reject... or so I hope :) PS. 他有特色 is indeed fine, but if you mean definitely cool, 他很特级 (tā hěn tèjí) is less ambiguous. (他有特色 feels more sarcastic, if I'm not culture biased).

June 1, 2007 at 7:23 PM嘿哟! ThaiTom :) I'd like just to answer that 不是 is pronounced búshì, but it seems not that clear. I share your doubts. Maybe someone could tell me if 不 before a neutral tone changes to second. It's not common, indeed I only see the verbal complement 不得 to provide an example. E.g. 他来不得 : He mustn't come. It is pronounced bùde, not búde, right? So it would not differ from the expressions where 得 is second tone (不得了 bù dé liǎo - 不得已 bù dé yǐ). If so, perhaps (here I'm venturing) sometimes 不是 will be pronounced bùshi, because of some assimilation with the numerous instances where 是 is neutral tone. This was a word from the Phoney Phonologist ;)

June 1, 2007 at 6:16 PMLantian, about your translations above: 礼貌 is a noun, the adjective should be 有礼貌 / 没礼貌 ; conversely, imho, 特别 is either an adjective (though not used as a predicate, *他很特别 as far as I know isn't valid) or an adverb. Did you ever see or hear 他有特别 followed by no PoS? *nota bene: 这个问题里面没有什么气焰 The tone of this question is merely curious. 虽然我才疏学浅, 但很高兴帮助你... I know you're not the one to reject comments even originating from 一个有点儿虚的心得! I also think that 素质 only accounts for your level of academic instruction. Semantic shifts happen though. Experience will tell you before I 翻然悔悟 (fān rán huǐ wù) =) 独特
