I think we can say 现在没在下雨, but I don't know if we can add a 了(le) 

(For elementary poddies: pinyin for the above hanzi is : xiànzài méizài xiàyǔ)

There is a dish that I ordered recently called 芥蓝 . 

Before I ordered it, I looked up how to pronounce it, and my dictionary says gàilán. When I told the waitress I wanted gàilán, she said, "oh, jièlán". Should it be pronounced gài or jiè in Mandarin?

Question:

Is there any reason why we say "雨停了", for "it stopped raining", and 停电了 for "the power went out" ?  In the first one, 停 is in the middle, but it's the first character in the other one

hey John,

Well, one thing I haven't been able to do since yesterday is check to see if anyone replied to my comments and posts. Under the "community" tab, we were able to click on "people who replied to me", but now that isn't working. I often leave questions on different lessons and wait for replies. If I'm not able to click on this to check for replies, I'll forget what comments I left, and I won't be able to check for them

thanks for sharing. The thing is though, that I realized at some point that things often get translated so that the target audience can understand them easily, not necessarily in order to convey the actual meaning of the original language used.

In this case of 书法, I've just never heard it used to mean "handwriting"; I've only heard it used to to mean writing with a brush and liquid ink. I don't think if I wrote something on a piece of paper with a pen, that any Chinese person would use the word 书法 in talking about how the handwriting or penmanship is.

While, it's true that “你中午吃什么” can mean "What do you eat for lunch" in the sense of one's eating habits, but I think it can also mean "What did you eat for lunch", if it's already past lunchtime.
