so would it be wrong if the scenario is a girl talking to her friend at 7:00 at night, and her friend wants to know what the girl had for lunch, she says “你中午吃什么” ？

I think that the 了 and be left out, and maybe even more natural this way, but I'm not sure, which is why I asked

interesting. Thanks for the explanation. So is the character 潜 pronounced with a 3rd tone by some people in all of the words that have 潜 in them, or is it just for the word 潜在　？

Chinese Question:

In the sentence, "你中午吃了什么", can we omit the 了(le) ? 

If the context is a girl talking to her friend at 7:00 at night, and her friend wants to know what the girl had for lunch, can she say “你中午吃什么” ？

(the pinyin for the above Chinese is: nǐ zhōngwǔ chī shénme)
