What a great topic the iconic Chinese tunes is.Understanding what it stirs in Chinese hearts was an excellent cultural insight. Thanks for this show Amber and David. The hairy crabs, like all Chinese cuisine ,was interesting also.

grettir,

I had been wondering the same thing for some time.I must say I was a little disappointed when I found out that  Sifu/Shifu  was  more widely used ,and not just reserved for kung fu teachers. And yes,it's pronounced like sea-fu or sea-foo.

scaleo86,

Sorry;you were absolutely right;exactly the same meaning.I thought when it changed to Chinese it was going to be looking at the question google or baidu from a Chinese perspective and the difference would be amusing. But it's just retelling the same joke in Chinese.I see now that that's probably going to be the format for all the jokes on this website :

www.mandmx.com

Oh well,a fun way to learn some characters then. Thanks for indulging me and giving the full translation.

scaleo86,

I presumed it was going to be very similar. But I thought there were likely to be small differences which would perhaps make more of a joke out of it?

goulniky,

Thanks.Aah,of course;if I was to find any answers I should have looked at the traditional form before they were simplified. But what a great explanation.

john,

thanks for the youtube links.I particularly enjoyed the burning hydrogen one.Not even any "don't try this at home kids" warnings.

It had been quite some time since I'd done any chemistry experiments when I heard about the diet coke and mentos eruption. So I had to try it out for myself. It worked ,but I can't remember now whether I used the mint variety which are meant to give the best reaction. There is a wikipedia article explaining it here.

The world record for the experiment is here.

Explained on mythbusters here.

Interesting that yan2 and xian2 sound similar, but the characters look completely different.

I love these cultural insights you give into even something as simple as asking for salt and pepper. It makes the discussion so much richer than just learning vocab. It's great how these scenarios are acted out so you can understand the context and meaning behind the words.Hearing words being said with different expressions is also very instructive. Thanks for another great lesson.
