August 9, 2010 at 2:08 PMthanks mate. Yeah, I'm sure it's safer than calling the laoban "fuwuyuan". I guess the other thing is ...what is really meant by calling them laoban? Are you suggesting that they are the boss of the establishment, or is it more just a respectful term..almost like suggesting they're you're boss? I guess if you did realise your blunder when the real laoban was revealed you could try and cover it with ...oh, laoban de laoban , hehe ;)

August 10, 2010 at 2:31 AMgreat post xiaophil. Yeah, this was my feeling to go with mother as well, but you've explained your reasoning well. I also can't help but feel you're right with:
"I think it is best to treat 老板娘 as two titles fused together, as in 'boss mother,' and not 'boss's mother.'"
...a nice distinction to draw...but unfortunately does disappoint Freud [and as bodawei pointed out..maybe you too ;) ]
