February 25, 2011 at 11:30 PMhaha, I'd love to hear that accent mate. I enjoy that sort of thing am not one to groan at a poor attempt. Give it a shot...I wouldn't think you're making fun but you can make fun if you like. We don't take ourselves too seriously. It does raise an interesting point though for we foreign learners of Chinese. What can we and what can't we get away with saying in Chinese? What is just going to sound weird/ unnatural coming from a non native? Can we go around calling locals 哥们儿 for example? You've given me this as an idea for a separate post.

I wrote that post in a hurry between tasks and was not entirely happy with how I couched it. I'm just glad we're good enough mates that you know I was trying to be helpful and just give you the way I look at it and haven't taken it the wrong way. It's a good question though and worth asking and I'd encourage you to keep asking such questions. I also hope you get a more insightful answer than mine from someone who actually knows the answer, hehe.

Also the intro to the lesson in the podcast said there were going to be 2 movies discussed [unless I misunderstood and they were referring to movie madness 2...maybe that's what's indicated by the blurb written above as the lesson intro]..did part of this lesson got the chop as what I downloaded only went for just under 5 minutes?

February 26, 2011 at 10:23 AMWe often talk about how contextual Chinese can be. My feeling is that when it comes to talking about language context, there are possibly several aspects to this. For example there is the language you might expect to encounter when talking about a certain topic. Hint number one. I think there are also many other contextual clues [previous discussions you may have had with the person, body language...I'm sure we could create a large list]. But even on the microscale, within the space of a few words we can have clues...whether it be grammatical structures, common associations or collocations. This example sentence from todays lesson was a good example for me:
他今天像吃了炸药一样
..when I first heard 像 I misheard it as 上 which wasn't making too much sense till I got to 一样 when a light bulb went off and I realised the preceding “上” 听错了 had to be 像。
I'm not sure if linguists have terms for these.
