Well, 本人没有经验，可是我有点儿惊讶 if that's the case. I think their outlook is different. I have struck many Westerners who seem to have the attitude that everyone should speak English and take it for granted when others do. On the other hand I have noted genuine surprise from the Chinese I have interacted with when you can speak any Chinese at all or show some modicum of understanding of their culture...they really do not expect this [ I know this runs contrary to that other post at the moment but I think you could be right on a couple of fronts there....it's their one shot at it if they don't speak English, who would venture out here without some language if it's rural, deng deng ]. So I guess my impression is they are easily BUT genuinely impressed...it gives their language and culture face..like that you're taking an interest and are genuinely pleased....and, and I think this is the key point, it is a contrast/pleasant surprise compared with the vast majority who show no understanding of the language or culture and no desire to. There is also their belief that Chinese is too hard a language for foreigners. Whatever you make of it, I don't spot anything fake about it [but yes, from our viewpoint it's highly exaggerated...but I think that's nice...they're coming from a good spot and also being encouraging]. I also don't think they're thinking of or implying MPS [and even if you're not saying they're implying it but just saying that it could imply MPS I wouldn't agree unless it was a specific circumstance ..very unlike the situation in the dialogue]....I think this is a Western/ Western interaction problem...at least that's my take on it. Of course, such praise may foster/encourage MPS in those susceptible, hehe.

I like the definition "to suppress inner feelings" as it seems to sum up the other derivations and also goes well with the break down of the character....the xin heart down the bottom which I presume is the radical and represents feelings, and the bi up the top which I guess is the phonetic but also has the meaning break, broken....to break the connection with your inner feelings ...feelings representing both emotions, inclinations, and calls of nature...nerve impulses. 16 stroke character...I'm wondering if the higher the CPod level, the more likely we are to strike the odd character with a high stroke count. Just a hypothesis.

Sorry John, I can't check currently, but from memory it was near the end of the podcast after the second round of listening to the dialogues 3 times. Dilu was asking about whether you're a zhongguotong. It's fitting you don't recall as you brushed it off with a "whatever" ...paid no heed [I'm not going there, don't care ] and moved right on. You were making the observation of how readily folk receive that appelation around that point in the podcast.

March 1, 2011 at 11:13 AMHey, I just had an idea...following on from the observation that this zhongguotong appelation is given out so easily, wouldn't it be ironic if you were accused of it and your zhongwen wasn't enough up to speed to know that that's what they were saying. Same goes with not understanding .."ni zhongwen shoude hen hao"...."what's that mate? ..qing man man shuo ", hehe
